Akira LIVE Action Movie To Start Shooting! (ft. Leonardo DiCaprio!)
Today we are talking About Akira’s Live action movie, How Leonardo DiCaprio and Taika Waititi is involved, the development of Akira Live Action and how it has been revived to start shooting amongst with some other Cyberpunk themed movies!
It seems like A Live-Action Akira movie is finally moving forward in development after being in the works since 2008 and will be filmed entirely in California with Taika Waititi (Director of Thor Ragnarok) and Leonardo DiCaprio taking the helm. Akira is a 1988 post-apocalyptic anime cult classic film created by Katsuhiro Otomo and based on a manga series. Akira is set in a dystopian 2019, and tells the story of Shotaro Kaneda and his biker gang, whose childhood friend Tetsuo acquires telekinetic powers in an accident. This threatens the military heavy world of Akira’s Neo Tokyo and chaos ensues.
The California Film Commission announced that Development hell for the Live action Akira is now over, years after Warner bros bought the rights for Akira back in 2002. They have received a credit of 18.5 million dollars as a sum for filming solely in California, and is comparable to recent credits like Transformers Bumbleebee at 22 million. It is also substantially higher than the 18 other movies being given the credit. Now it’s to be noted this isn’t the full budget of the film, but because the grant is so high, could mean a big overall budget.
The filming of the Akira live action movie should take just over two and a half months, and the adaptation is being produced by previously mentioned Leonardo DiCaprio and Andrew Lazar.
With “White-washing” of characters being a big issue in film today, Waititi claims that he is a big fan of the original Manga and will stay true to its roots by using an Asian teenager cast.
With shows like Altered Carbon Season 2 on the Horizon, Neuromancers film adaptation in production with Deadpool director Tim Miller at the wheel, Dredd Megacity one slated for a 2019 release, Cowboy Bebops Live action it’s a good time to be a fan of the Cyberpunk and Cyberpunk styled genre.
