We’ve seen new environments and some of the classes, such as the Stabbomancer and the Brr-Zerker, that we’ll be playing as when we scour them for monsters and loot. 

Gearbox also relaunched the original DLC that inspired Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, Assault on Dragon Keep, as a standalone game. This further confirms that Wonderlands is a sequel of sorts, and that players can expect the same chaotic energy and tabletop inspirations that made that expansion so memorable.

What is the Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands release date?

The Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands release date is March 25, 2022, on the Epic Games Store. That’s pretty soon considering Borderlands 3 launched less than two years ago, although according to Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford, the concept has been in development for ten years. 

The first hands-on gameplay for Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands

In the first footage of uncut gameplay that we’ve seen for Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, IGN got to go hands on with the pre-release version of the game. The preview features hordes of skeletons, a treasure trove of guns, and some pretty hilarious dialogue.

The story trailer gives a little insight into the new and returning cast, including the Dragon Lord, an evil necromancer created by Tiny Tina, and both Valentine and Frette, the roguish lead and his accounting-bot sidekick. It’s colorful, irreverent, and tabletop-fantasy infused to its very core.

This energetic trailer gives us our first look at Tiny Tina’s gameplay, appropriately accompanied by a catchy tune from kawaii metal band Babymetal. Tiny Tina’s D&D-inspired fantasy world includes underground caverns, huge mushroom forests, and troll-filled mountains. 

There are walking skeletons and dragon lords to contend with, too, as well as plenty of weapons to help you deal with the hordes of goofy enemies the game throws your way. The original E3 announcement trailer also shows off a slightly more cinematic take on the fantasy adventure: 

Every Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands class we know about so far

Gearbox has so far revealed six of the classes we’ll be able to play as when we delve into Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands. Here are a few details about each as well as the video that breaks down their main abilities:

• Stabbomancers: As you’d guess from the name, all about magic and knives, and stealthily summoning spells involving knives before disappearing into the shadows.
• Brr-Zerkers: Melee brawlers who use frost abilities and brute force to freeze and crush enemies.

• Clawbringer: This is your typical hammer-wielding class, with AoE smash attacks, and the ability to chuck your hammer at enemies before it comes flying back into your hand. You also get a cute little dragon pet.
• Spellshot: If you like magic, this is the class for you, since these sorcerors are ‘ambi-hextrous’ and can use both of their hands to perform spells at once, Skyrim-style. You can also use their polymorph ability to turn enemies into skeep.

• Graveborn: These dark spellcasters are the epitome of glass cannon, trading health for high damage spells like their Dire Sacrifice ability. Similar to Clawbringer, they also have a floating skull friend that follows them around. 
• Sporewarden: This is your quintessential archer class, with an arrow barrage ability and a frost cyclone spell that homes in on enemies.

What does the Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands map look like?

As the game is heavily inspired by tabletop RPGs, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands map features both a variety of dungeons, and an overworld with loot, quests, random encounters, and lots of different environments to explore, including one called Butt Stallion Castle. This is presumably where Wonderlands’ ruler, Butt Stallion, resides. Here are some of the ones we know about so far:

• Brighthoof: The capital of the Wonderlands and Butt Stallions’ Queendom, protected by the Diamond Guard, but recently dealing with enemy incursions.
• Butt Stallion’s Castle: Known as Castle Sparklewithers, this glowing fortress is home to the ruler of the Wonderlands.
• Sunfang Oasis: A paradise of lagoons, lush foliage, and ancients ruins set in the middle of the desert. Unfortunately, it’s also inhabited by the Coiled, who sound like snake monsters.
• Tangledrift: A beanstalk that has grown so large it has created its own ecosystem, with people living in homes out of harms reach of the monsters below.

You’ll navigate these locations via a tabletop RPG-style overworld, moving your Chibi-esque characters on a board, and tapping random encounters to enter seperate mini-maps based on each. You can also get the full description of how this works on the official blogpost.

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands gameplay: How will it work?

For the most part, probably similar to Borderlands. Lots of combat, lots of goofy humour, lots of shooting damage numbers out of things to get better weapons so you can shoot bigger numbers out of things. Characters who talk far too much, undermining their own jokes in the process. Everything that was great about Borderlands will likely feature, as will everything annoying.

Wonderlands also has the same emphasis on loot as Borderlands, although with a more fantastical theme, offering armour as a collectible alongside weapons. There are some more notable differences too—Wonderlands introduces melee weapons for the first time, although they are unlikely to take precedent over your guns. 

One big difference: Wonderlands has no grenades. Instead, players will be able to cast a variety of spells, and apparently most of them have short cooldowns, meaning you can use fire or tornados to blast enemies, or play more of a support role, reducing cooldowns and offering protection. According to Cox: “We actually like to think of our spells more as mini skills, because of their power and their variety of behaviours.”

What is the story of Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands?

The specifics of Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands’ story are still under-wraps, but it’s clear what the gist of the story will be—and we know it immediately follows the beloved Borderlands 2 DLC Assault on Dragon Keep. In that expansion, Tiny Tina and the heroes of the first Borderlands game play a Tabletop RPG called “Bunkers and Badasses”. Controlling the characters of Borderlands 2, they go on a fantasy adventure, with Tiny Tina acting as Dungeon Master in her wildly unpredictable style.

In a trailer breakdown produced by IGN, Wonderlands’ creative Director Matt Cox explains the game “takes place shortly after Dragon Keep”, but that it’s “a brand new adventure in a brand new world in the mind of Tiny Tina.” So while it follows on from Dragon Keep, it sounds more like a standalone experience than a direct sequel.

This makes even more sense when you consider that Gearbox recently launched Assault on Dragon Keep as a standalone game calling it ‘A Wonderlands One-shot Adventure’.

With the new story trailer release, we also get to see more of some of the new and returning characters in Valentine, Frette, Torgue, and Tiny Tina’s latest antagonist, the Dragon Lord.

Which characters will you play as in Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands?

Your own! In a first for the Borderlands series, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands will let players create their own characters, rather than playing as a set of pre-established Vault Hunters. Cox states specifically these can be “multi-classed” heroes, which sounds like a standard tabletop affair, giving you the ability to use the skills and abilities of several character classes, although Wonderlands will probably adapt this to freely let you pick your skills, since it isn’t bothered with classes. He also states that the heroes will be customisable.

I can’t imagine what a Borderlands character looks like with all the sliders set to max. It’ll probably start leaking out of your screen.

Will Ashly Burch be reprising her role as Tiny Tina?

Yep, and that’s not all. Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands has an impressive voice cast, including Brooklyn 99’s Andy Samberg, Bojack Horseman’s Will Arnett, Wanda Sykes, seen in shows like Black-ish and Curb Your Enthusiasm, and veteran voice actor Gabe Kunda, who does a lot of voice work for videogames and anime shows.

The IGN video also provides some idea of who these actors will be playing. Gabe Kunda voices the figure seen in the trailer, although it’s not specified who that is. Will Arnett will play the tyrant Dragon Lord, the game’s main villain. Andy Samberg plays a character called “Captain Ballantyne,” while Wanda Sykes assumes the role of “The rule-obsessed robot ‘Frett'” in the words of Matt Cox.

I hope they don’t try to shoehorn Claptrap in somehow. If I never see that gibbering sentient dustbin again, it’ll be too soon.

What’s the setting of Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands?

In the IGN video, Cox describes it as a “chaotic brand of fantasy.” So while there will be skeletons, dragons, and whatnot, you’ll also encounter strange creatures such as sharks with legs, which you might have spotted in the trailer.

In Assault on Dragon Keep, this chaos is driven by the whims of Tiny Tina, who regularly alters the rules of the game based on her mood and impulses. At the start of Dragon Keep, for example, players arrive at a village harbour in the sun, the sky streaked with rainbows, only for Tina to quickly change her mind about the weather, making the whole sky roll over to reveal a dark and stormy night.

By the sounds of things, Wonderlands intends to be a larger version of this playful, capricious world. “The very unpredictable Tiny Tina makes the rules, she changes the world on the fly, and guides players on their epic fantasy journey,” Cox explains. Whether or not this will be purely scripted or a more dynamic affair that relates to your actions in the game, is as yet unclear.
